The Spirit of Iowans embodies in the motto of our state: “Our Liberties we prize and our rights we will maintain.” As Libertarians we believe that chief among these rights are self-ownership, self-governance, and strong property rights.
It is not the place of government to interfere with an individual’s freedom of choice. Thus, insofar as an act is not injurious to another party, we support its decriminalization, and the total abolition of victimless ‘crimes’. As a first step in ending the prohibition culture, we call for the immediate end to Iowa’s costly and ineffective ‘War on Drugs’.
Whenever any form of government becomes destructive of individual liberty, it is the right of the people to alter or to abolish it, and to agree to such new governance as to them shall seem most likely to protect their liberty. To this end we call for the replacement of Iowa’s single-winner Electoral College with one of proportional representation.
Individuals should be free to govern themselves and to accept responsibility for the consequences of the choices they make. To do so they must be free of coercion, and the threat of physical force by government. As such we call for an immediate halt to the militarization of law enforcement within the state, and an end to ‘no-knock’ raids.
All members of society are entitled to an equal opportunity to achieve economic success. For that opportunity to exist; the right to control, use and dispose of property must enjoy the same protections as all other human rights. To protect that right we call for an end to regressive levies on productivity through the elimination of personal and corporate income taxes in Iowa.
To prevent their abuses the state should not be able to sell or otherwise forfeit its powers of Eminent Domain to individuals, corporations, or other entities. Finally, in interest of economic fairness, we call for an end to all subsidies and incentives for or administered by the state of Iowa.
