Platform of the

Libertarian Party of Iowa.

Preamble

The Spirit of Iowans embodies in the motto of our state: “Our Liberties we prize and our rights we will maintain.” As Libertarians we believe that chief among these rights are self-ownership, self-governance, and strong property rights.

Self-Ownership

It is self-evident that each person has the highest possible claim to the rights and decision-making power over their own bodies. No other person, group, nor people via government should interfere with an individual’s freedom of choice, insofar as that choice is not injurious to another party.

Self-Governance

Whenever any form of government becomes destructive of individual liberty, it is the right of the people to alter or to abolish it. Individuals should be free to govern themselves and to accept responsibility for the consequences of the choices they make.

Property Rights

It is self-evident that all members of society should enjoy full rights over their justly acquired property, whether that property was created, gifted, or acquired through voluntary trade. These property rights include the right to control, use, and dispose of property in any way that does not infringe upon others’ property rights.
