It’s a New Year

The 87th General Assembly begins January 9, 2017. No Libertarian will be in the Iowa legislature this time, but we invite you to share your opinions with us. Follow us on Facebook, visit this website for information, talk with your neighbors at a county affiliate meeting or event, and attend our annual convention on March 24-25, 2017.

State agencies began pre-filing bills in December 2016. Examples of pre-filed bills include: from the Board of Pharmacy a proposal on controlled substances schedules to bring Iowa law up-to-date with federal law, from the Department of Public Safety a proposal on who must register as a sex offender by clarifying incarcerated does not mean placement in a residential correctional or treatment facility, and from the College Student Aid Commission a few proposals on who is eligible for loan forgiveness.

The latest revision to the State revenue projections means the next State budget must be revised to account for lower revenue. The LPIA would like to hear Libertarians’ thoughts on what should be budgetary priorities. Is working on a budget based on projected revenues even the best approach to preparing budgets? Should we consider starting with the minimal needs of government, then determine what revenue would be needed to meet those expenses? Then, instead of taking in money and deciding how to spend it, we would think of what we wanted from government and decide how to fund it.
