Commission on Presidential Debate – Debate 2

The second debate, in a town hall style, is beginning. Gary Johnson will not be on the stage, but here is a link to a town hall on CNN Gov. Johnson and his vice presidential running mate Gov. Bill Weld participated in earlier this year.

As with other debates from which he has been excluded by the structure of how polls have been conducted, Gary Johnson will be tweeting during this debate. (Note: The debate and this post are occurring on October 9, 2016, but due to the time zone in which posts are recorded, the date appears as October 10 on the post.)

This debate is being held at Washington University in St. Louis.  St. Louis Public Radio took a look at the history of debates hosted by the University, the costs of hosting, and the benefits to students.

Questions for this town hall-style debate were promoted on Open Debate Coalition, a bi-partisan (yes, there is that word again, bi-partisan, not non-partisan). Here is a link to the website on which questions were submitted and voted on for possible inclusion in the debate tonight.  The two questions receiving well over 100,000 votes dealt with protecting the Second Amendment and background checks for gun ownership. The next questions receiving the most votes each had fewer than 50,000 votes and included Social Security benefits, climate change, and campaign contributions by corporations.

The St. Louis Dispatch had a piece on pre-debate activities, including this comment from a person outside the debate site: “Another pair of students who held signs supporting Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson said they believed he stood for personal liberty and that they supported his efforts to focus on national issues. They condemned Clinton and Trump for policies they believed depended too heavily on big business.”

8:57 p.m. – recent tweet from @GovGaryJohnson – Back to fighting about scandals. We started with and emails. Now we’re to and tax returns. America can do better.

9:12 p.m. – recent tweet from @GovGaryJohnson – The civil war in Syria is heart-breaking. W/o strong diplomacy, Hillary’s safe zone ineffective and would require U.S. boots on the ground.

9:14 p.m. – The New York Times dismissed both Trump and Clinton, choosing to do a live email with Libertarian vice presidential candidate during tonight’s presidential debate. Here is a link to the NY Times piece.
